A new Milky Way as seen by Herschel

Description
It is only two years since the scientific instruments on board the Herschel satellite have been switched on, and already in this very short timeframe our understanding of the Milky Way Galaxy is starting to change. I will illustrate the recent results that we are obtaining from the Hi-GAL Key-Project (the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane Survey) as well as from the wide field photometric imaging surveys of the nearest Star Formation Regions. From filamentary structures where dense protocluster progenitors fragment, to cold massive disks detected around the Galactic Center, Herschel is paving the way toward a revolution in our understanding of our Galaxy as a star formation engine.
