High-energy nuclear collisions and the quark-gluon plasma: past, present and future
Abstract. I shall review the development of the physics of partonic matter, from the early theoretical developments in the 70’s, through the main discoveries at the SPS and at RHIC, to the recent LHC breakthroughs. Thanks to the experience and understanding accumulated over more than three decades and to decisive recent instrumental progress, today we are entering a new era of systematic investigation of the emergent properties of the condensed matter of QCD. I will outline some of the main perspectives for the near- and medium-term future.
